FEU – Research Centre for European Environmental Law

The Research Centre was founded in 1994 as an institute within the Faculty of Law. It predominantly conducts research for institutions such as the European Commission, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the Federal Environment Agency, the German Research Foundation and the Volkswagen Foundation. The Research Centre hosts a specialized library containing about 1200 titles on environmental and technical issues, which is open to the public.


The activities of the Research Centre focus on:


  • German, European and International Environmental, Climate and Planning Law
  • Relationships and Interactions between Environmental, Administrative and Business Law
  • Comparative Environmental Law
  • Interdisciplinarity and Cooperation with other disciplines, mainly with natural and political scientists, sociologists and economists
  • Organisation of Conferences, Workshops and Expert Seminars
  • Editorship of the series “Studies of Environmental Law” as well as the “Zeitschrift für Umweltrecht” (published by Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft) and the “Journal of Environmental Law”
  • Coordination of the "avosetta group", an association of European Environmental Law Lawyers
